The Studio
After over a decade of running and working from commercial facilities, I’ve finally been able to build my dream studio. Nestled in a suburb less than ten minutes from the centre of Leeds, my place is a private boutique studio packed to the rafters with enough instruments, amps and pedals to make every single record unique and special.
The day-lit live room was professionally designed to capture a focused, articulate and powerful drum sound with minimal processing. An air conditioned, soundproofed room within a room design, it’s created to leave the outside world outside, so we can focus on crafting the best record we possibly can without distraction.
The control room is acoustically flat. It follows the golden ratio for control room designs, soffit mounted Unity Audio Boulder & Avalanche speakers, and more acoustic treatment than I thought was physically possible. All of that basically means that we can hear every single tracking, mixing or mastering decision with crystal clear precision.
The control room is designed for efficiency. If we have an idea, we want to be able to act on that as quickly as possible to keep the creative spark, so everything is within arms reach, plugged in and ready to go. The centre section of the studio features a desk containing Neve, Burl, Great River, CAPI, Phoenix and LEV preamps, SSL and JDK EQs and a pair of EL Distressors alongside the holy grail Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor. To the left, we have some of the best amps of all time from Marshall, Orange, Peavey, Fender and Vox, and to the right we have a collection of fantastic guitars and basses.
Outside the studio, we have a garden area, kitchenette and bathroom. Plus a couple of cats, Seth & Fil.
